British Shorthair

MACIOCE 5The British Shorthair is a descendant of cats brought in Great Britain by the Romans and cross breeded with wild native cats. We know from history that the British Shorthair lived wild, or at least were not known as a breed untill the 19° century. In the second half of the 800’s Harrison Weir decided to select the breed of the blu coloured cat and introduced it for the first time at the Crystal Palace Feline Exhibition in 1871. The british blu were for a long time confused and cross breeded with French Carthusian cats, but the characteristics of these two genotypes are quite different. The popularity of this breed started to decrease in 1940, from the end of the Second World War the number of the breeding programs were intensified and their popularity increased once again. For a while the british were cross breeded with Persian cats in order to have a softer body and a rounder head.
Initially called “British Blue” from the colour of it’s mantle, the final name was “British Shorthair” when other colours came out. Nowadays 18 colours are recognized. In 1901 the British Cat Club was foundated.
